Deerfield Academy Jr. A Soccer beat a solid Williston team 6 – 1 on Wednesday afternoon. Down three players, Deerfield nevertheless began the game strong and never let up. Adrian Yao ’20 and Eric Wang ’21 led the attack, pressing the Williston defense from the whistle. Yao sent the ball up the side to Sam Lauer ’20, who blitzed through the Williston backline, racing the backline to put the ball in the net past the outstretched hands of the keeper for DA’s first goal. Lauer continued to press the attack, fielding passes from Tait Kline ’22 for two more shots on goal. Finally, Tomás Cushman ’22 and Connor Olson ’22 connected with good movement up the sideline, Cushman sending the ball ahead to Lauer, who knocked his second goal in. After the half, Jared Faux ’20 and Adrian played more of the two man game, ultimately leading back to Cushman in the center of the field. Cushman broke through the backline, pushing the ball through and chasing for a shot to put DA up 3 – 0. Only a few minutes later, Nate Zucker ’22 played a quick, short ball to Faux, who sent it one more to Cushman for his second goal of the match. Williston fought hard, though, earning a goal on a well shot penalty kick to make it 4 – 1. Kline continued to play strong balls from the midfield, leading to opportunities from Olson and Lauer, and the DA backline of Arthur Yao ’20, Tommy Leimkuhler ’22, and Nasir Barnes ’21 held down the fort. Kline took a long corner kick, which led to a shot from Eric Wang ’21. The powerful shot bounced off the keeper’s hands in an excellent save, but Alex Strait ’20 was right there to stuff it in for his first goal of the season and Jr. A’s fifth goal of the match. As time was winding down, Gale Gai ’22 sent a high cross from the left corner to Cushman, who dropped it off to Wang for a sniper shot that led to DA’s 6th and final goal of the match. DA walked away with a great 6 – 1 win against a good team.
