Deerfield Academy’s shorthanded Boys Jr. A Soccer team scrapped their way to a 0 – 0 tie against a quick and highly skilled Cardigan Mountain squad in Canaan, New Hampshire. In the first half, the two sides traded possession back and forth quickly in a style that would characterize the rest of the game. Both sides missed shots on chances stemming from nice crosses on corner kicks in the first few minutes. Deerfield’s Elliot Flagg ’20 and Noah Jung ’19 sent balls across the middle, ending in solid tries from Tommie Gilmore ’20 and Connor Guest ’20. Throughout the game, James Whitley ‘20 in the backfield and keeper Matt Gardner ‘20 made save after save of well-struck balls from the Cardigan team. After the half, the pace of the game picked up, with Gardner continuing to keep the net clear. DA got a breakaway on a clean pass by Eric Wang ’21 to the corner, where Merritt Wurts ‘21 crossed the ball directly into the CMS box, but unfortunately the finishing touch wasn’t quite there. The game ended with a penalty kick by Cardigan after some physical play in the box, but the ball sailed over the net to seal the 0 – 0 tie.
