Soccer, Boys: Junior A defeats Choate

Event Details

Boys Jr. A Soccer beat a very strong Choate team 3 – 1 on Saturday, led by captains Phillip Weymouth ’18 and Tommy Whiteley ‘18. The boys warmed up in the frigid November morning by pressing the Choate defense aggressively after kickoff. A corner from Colin Olsen ’19 bounced around the box, and Elliot Flagg ’20 and Weymouth ’18 led the early attack with multiple opportunities on goal. Just a few moments later, Merrit Wurts ’21 sent a high arcing ball from midfield off the top crossbar to put Deerfield up 1 – 0. Whitely ’18 and Teddy Donahue ’21 held the defensive line against the energetic counterattack from Choate. However, a quick Choate breakaway led to a goal slipping past the DA keeper and a tied game at 1 – 1. Deerfield came back strong with good ball control and movement. Wurts ’21 led a midfield push, sending a gorgeous through-ball past the Choate defense to Weymouth ’18, who buried a powerful strike in the back of the net past the Choate keeper’s fingers to retake the lead at 2 – 1. Noah Depp ‘21’s energy on the left wing helped Deerfield maintain possession throughout the majority of the remainder of the half. After play resumed, Olsen ’19 dribbled past the Choate midfield on the wing and sent a beautiful cross to James Whiteley ’20, who rifled a shot to the upper left of the net to put Deerfield up 3 – 1. Although Choate struck back on several attempts, goalie Matthew Gardner ’19 kept the DA net free to ice the final game of the season, 3 – 1.
