The hustle and bustle of Fall Family Weekend made for a great crowd for the Deerfield JV Soccer team to take on the Taft Rhinos. The excitement and support from both families and fellow Big Green teams competing all across campus gave JV soccer the extra boost to pull a win out of Saturday’s game.
In the opening minutes of the first half, the Taft offense came out strong, rocketing off a number of shots that were no match for Deerfield’s keeper, Chip ’20. Calm and composed, she got her body behind every shot, catching every one in her arms with ease. After being tested by Taft’s offensive line those few times, Deerfield took control of the game, and shifted the play into Taft’s half. In the 26th minute forward, Stitch ’21 turned an interception and breakaway into a goal, bringing the Big Green up 1-0. The score remained unchanged for the remainder of the first half, as Deerfield held strong possession and continued to deny every Taft scoring attempt.
At the start of the second half, the Deerfield offense created a number of scoring opportunities for themselves, but didn’t actually put one in until Laffy Taffy ’20, took advantage of a loose ball in the Taft 18-yard box during the 50th minute. At this point, it became clear that Deerfield was dominating the entire field; their confidence began rising as Taft’s declined. Crisp passing and well-executed plays on both offense and defense created more and more opportunities for successful shots. In the 58th minute, Jessie, the Yodeling Cowgirl ’19 sent one in, solidifying the 3-0 final score.
This was a big win for the Big Green, and they will take it as momentum into their next game at home this Sunday, October 29th against Andover.
Go Deerfield!
