Boys Jr B Soccer defeats Westminster 3-1
The Jr. B Soccer team traveled to Simsbury, Connecticut on Saturday to take on the Westminster Fourths squad. Deerfield started strong with sustained offense from forwards Nic Labadan ’18, Sultan Lawal ’21 and Kye Liew ’18 supported by excellent ball control by midfielders Sam Laur ’20, Ethan Chen ’20 and Rob Sawyers ’21. Forwards Willy Conzelman ’21, Chase Mathis ’21 and Inthat Boonpongmanee ’19 continued the pressure and created several scoring chances, while the defensive backfield of Arthur Yao ’20, Henry Barrera ’21, Nasir Barnes ’21 and John O’Loughlin fielded numerous clearing attempts by Westminster and initiated the Deerfield counterattack. Ethan Chen scored on a pass from Sam Laur at the 20th minute and the first half ended 1-0, with no shots on goal by the home team.
Deerfield continued to generate solid chances on offense in the second half as the forward line of Gerald Xu ’21, Herman Bikoko ’21 and Chiji Achebe ’21 led the attack. At the 15 minute mark, Sultan Lawal converted a cross from Rob Sawyers to put Deerfield up 2-0. Westminster followed by attempting several long through balls and finally broke through to put three shots on the Deerfield net, two of which were saved by keeper Shane McCarthy ’21. Deerfield responded with a goal from Rob Sawyers and played strong defense the rest of the way to emerge with a 3-1 victory.
