Deerfield Hockey hit the road this afternoon to take on Cushing. Traveling in a Green Machine for the first time this year, and therefore not able to watch a hockey movie for inspiration, the team resorted to a country music sing-along to get pumped up. It seems to have worked, as the team skated away with a decisive 6-0 victory. Mary Edmonds ’19 scored the lone goal of the first period, tipping home a Deirdre Mullowney ’19 shot from the point. The Big Green broke things open with three goals in the second, two by Edmonds (the first off of a rebound from a Mullowney shot, and the second a short handed effort after Meaghan O’Brien ’18 and Mae Emerson ’19 combined to thwart the Cushing rush and send the puck up ice). Libby Wenners ’17 got the other second period goal (assist to Emerson), a beautiful shot from the point that went top corner. A tri-Varsity athlete since her 9th grade year, and a stalwart on defense for the field hockey, hockey, and lacrosse teams, this was Libby’s first ever Deerfield goal! The third period saw goals from Meghan Halloran   ’17 (on the power play, with assists to Edmonds and Mullowney) and Shai Lineberry ’17, who capitalized on a rebound from a nice Margaret Williams ’19 shot. Liv Mikesell ’20 earned the shutout with 18 saves, and it was great to see all 21 skaters contribute to the victory. Next up is Cushing on the road on Saturday. Many thanks to the Mannings and DeMarcos for the pasta, meatballs, bread, drinks, and desserts after the game.
