Late NMH Goal Likely Pushes Deerfield out of Playoff Picture

In a fast paced, high energy game, the boys varsity soccer team fell 1-0 in a game that was decided in the final five minutes. Both teams had several great scoring opportunities throughout the match. The best DA opportunity coming with 3 seconds left in the first half, when a pass from Senior George Fair ’17 found the foot of PG Chad Haggerty just outside the 6-yard box. Haggerty ’17 hit the ball well but the NMH keeper did a great job of getting to it, knocking it straight over the cross bar. DA would create two more opportunities early in the second, but the keeper was once again up to the task. As the back and forth action continued throughout, it was until with 4:45 left in the game that NMH was able to break through. With the big green playing down a man as a result of a red card, NMH was able to move the ball with more room on the field and found an open player at the top of the box. The forward struck the ball well and found the back of the net, putting the visiting side up a goal very late in the game. The boys in green did not give up however, earning a free kick with two minutes to play. A well struck ball by PG Angel Paes was well defended and the game ended in a 1-0 loss, most likely ending the Big Green’s chances of sneaking into the playoffs. The Big Green still have one game left to play this season, a big rivalry game against Choate in Wallingford, CT on Saturday. Kickoff is set for noon.
