Spain #11: Cádiz Cathedral

Walker ’25, describes a visit to the Cádiz Cathedral and an enjoyable evening spent watching fútbol with his host dad, Alberto. In an effort to continue a fully immersive language experience, this blog post is written in both Spanish and English.

Today, Monday June 24, was our first day of school back from our overnight trip to Sevilla. We talked more about how the trip went with our teacher, Juan, and also talked about the week ahead. This coming weekend, the group will travel once again for an overnight trip to a town east of Cadiz called Málaga. Furthermore, class was mainly structured around vocabulary while traveling such as words and phrases used in restaurants, as well as a deeper review of different conjugations. The main event of the day was traveling to the historic district of Cadiz in order to get a closer look at the cathedral in the heart of the city. I had previously visited the cathedral when we had a scavenger hunt that took us around the city for one of our activities last week, and I was excited to spend some extra time looking at the architecture and paintings from hundreds of years ago. We got to travel around the cathedral with listening devices that gave in depth descriptions and histories of each part of the cathedral. My favorite part of the cathedral was the underground crypt that held some of the older relics from many centuries in the past.

After our visit to the cathedral had passed, we were given some free time before the evening activity to either walk more around the city, or travel back to the new district. Our evening activity that was scheduled for tonight was another session of yoga on the beach, which proved to be a relaxing way to unwind after a long couple of days walking around Sevilla and Cadiz. Coming back to our apartment, Luka, Gabe, and I were ready to eat dinner, and watch some soccer with our host parents. A tournament called the Euros is going on right now. The Euros is very similar to the world cup. The tournament is held every four years, and hence the name, is exclusive to national teams of European countries. We watched Spain take victory over Albania 1-0. Right now, Germany, France, and Spain are doing particularly well in their respective first stages of the tournament.
