Residential Life at Deerfield provides opportunities for students to live independently from their families while also providing structure, accountability, and fun.
Around campus, there are mirrors and quads with the goal of having brother-sister dorms with outside spaces for students to interact.
Our 9th Graders all live together in the 9th Grade Village – girls in Johnson and boys in Doubleday- and these two dorms are connected through a giant common room. Each 9th grader has a roommate, or two, which provides a great chance for students to cohabitate and learn to communicate effectively with peers.
Our 10th graders all have singles and dorms are coupled in the mirror-quad style.
In both the 9th and 10th grade dorms, we have senior proctors, who are selected through a rigorous process, and these student leaders are role models and meteors for the younger students.
Juniors and seniors live together. Again, we have mirrors and quads so the older students can interact with one another with ease. Peer Counselors, a group of 16 juniors and seniors, are scattered throughout the dorms and they serve as sources of additional support for their peers. These leaders are trained through the Health Center team and are a great resource to the community.
There is a faculty resident on each hall as well as a faculty associate. Students get to know these adults well and the faculty provide support to the students for issues big and small. Additionally, there are nine Residential Heads, who work across campus to ensure that student and adults are supported and that there are ample opportunities for dorm-wide snacks, fun, and educational activities.
Throughout the year, students have conversations in the dorm, both formal and informal, that seek to provide moments for students to reflect on the school’s core values as well as health and wellness topics. Faculty residents, with support from proctors and peer counselors, guide students through discussions and activities at moments in the year when the content is most relevant.
More than anything, Deerfield’s residential community provides a healthy environment for students to explore who they are and want to be. With guidance from adults, students flourish in the dorms and with one another.
