Every year, Deerfield Academy offers our students a chance to take a very special trip to New York City to see a show. This year, on Saturday, October 19, we’ll be going to the Metropolitan Opera to see a new production called Grounded.
Written by Tony Award-winning composer Jeanine Tesori (Kimberly Akimbo, Fun Home), Grounded tells the story of Jess, a hot-shot fighter pilot whose unplanned pregnancy takes her out of the cockpit and lands her in Las Vegas, operating a Reaper drone halfway around the world. As she adjusts to this new way of doing battle, she struggles under the pressure to be the perfect soldier, the perfect wife, and the perfect mother all at the same time.
The trip, which is completely free for all students, will bring you from Deerfield in the morning, down to New York, and back late in the evening. We’ll have one meal on the bus, and one meal at a restaurant in New York, and there will be some limited time to walk around New York in small chaperoned groups following the opera. This is an all-day trip, and all students who participate need to be certain they do not have a cocurricular conflict that day. If you’d like to go on the trip, but have a game or practice scheduled, you need to speak with your cocurricular leaders before signing up.
Spots on the trip are limited, and students will be taken on a first come, first served basis, so sign up now as long as you’re sure you don’t have a cocurricular conflict!
