Daisy ’26 works with the Massachusetts Migrant Education Program to keep kids learning and feeling welcomed this summer.
My project this summer was to buy and transport art kits and crafts for migrant children in my area of Western Massachusetts through the Massachusetts Migrant Education Program. The age range was from kindergarteners to middle school. These kits and projects help them to not only learn and grow but feel more welcomed and acclimated into a space that can be too busy to pay attention to them.
I shopped for activities kids can enjoy during their free time this summer. It also helps to lessen a parent’s stress, to know that their child can entertain themselves and have fun. On August 1st, I visited the school that the program was connected to. I provided ice cream treats and helped the teachers serve pizza to their students so I could meet the people I was impacting face to face. This was an eye-opening experience for me. Through it, I learned the importance of joy and a sense of welcoming. I also learned the importance of consistency and communication in aiding people.
