My CSGC grant project is focused on helping migrant children in my local area, Western Massachusetts. Specifically the money will buy kits that provide the kids with fun activities to get through the summertime, for example jewelry-making sets. Especially for newly arrived migrants, having some source of entertainment makes for an easier time acclimating to a foreign place, especially when the activities don’t require a high level of English fluency. The age range will be around middle school.
After I received the grant, I organized a google meet on June 5th with the Director of the Massachusetts Migrant Education Program, Emily Hoffman. Originally my project was going to be gathering and putting together back to school supplies for her program but during our meeting she redirected my attention to the activity kits. She also set me up for a chance to actually see the migrant children. I’m helping by joining their “field day” on August 1st that celebrates the end of that year’s school program. Thank you.
