This summer I was lucky enough to spend a month at the Island School in Eleuthera, Bahamas. I studied sustainability, marine biology, and the impact of tourism on a small island like Eleuthera.
We were up at 6:00 am, running, swimming and snorkeling. Fun included dish crew in the kitchen and a 40-hour solo on a deserted beach. We were unplugged with no phones or internet, and as surprising as this may sound, it was the most amazing experience of my life. You make friends that will last a lifetime, away from the outside influences of social media and without the competition of a school environment. We worked as a team and we learned to appreciate our differences as well as our similarities.
I want to encourage other Deerfield students to consider applying for Summer 2022. The Island School will meet 100% of demonstrated need and the application is due in January. Check it out: islandschool.org/summer-term and feel free to reach out to me at wrome23@deerfield.edu with any questions. It will be the best decision you ever make!
