Community work in a third world country has its challenges, however thanks to the CSGC and the Workman grant I was able to make an impact on disadvantaged communities in my home country of Nicaragua. Through perseverance and good will, I was able to understand the logistics involved in operating a donation initiative to a non-profit organization in a third world country like Nicaragua.
One huge takeaway from this experience that I believe is truly valuable, was realizing how good it feels to give. Ever since I was young, my father always told me that “life’s biggest gift is giving.” Purchasing new athletic equipment and school materials for these local communities as well as donating gently used Deerfield lacrosse equipment such as jerseys, gloves and masks helped me fulfill the community’s needs. This unconditional support and collaboration from all sides ultimately put a smile on my face and made me enjoy the the art of giving. I also realized that my work with Lacrosse the Nations has helped me learn how to use sports as platforms for education, health, and life skills for children. Overall, I’ve noticed how lacrosse specifically encapsulates both of my passions: Sports and serving my community. After all these years, I have become more attached with lacrosse both athletically and personally and wish to continue impacting lives in the near future after I graduate from Deerfield.
It was an amazing experience to say the least and it will definitely be a memorable summer for both the kids and for myself. I again want to thank the CSGC, Mr. Howe, the Workman family, and the Deerfield Community for making this an incredible summer and one definitely for the books.
