New Dorm Named in Honor of Dr. Curtis

Dr. Margarita O’ Byrne Curtis—Deerfield Academy’s 55th Head of School—retires this spring. On Friday, Board President Brian Simmons P’12,’14 announced at a school celebration for Dr. Curtis that an anonymous donor has renamed New Dorm to O’Byrne Curtis in honor of her 13 years of service as Head of School. Molly Schaus ’06 Presented with 2019 Ashley Award

Molly Schaus ’06 was presented with the 2019 Ashley Award at School Meeting on April 17. The Ashley Award, named in honor of Tom Ashley, Class of 1911, was created by the Executive Committee of the Alumni Association to recognize a young Deerfield alumnus or alumna who is pursuing a life of service. It honors those who can serve as an example for current students and their fellow alumni.

Nine Deerfield Students Honored with Scholastic Art & Writing Awards

Nine Deerfield students have been honored with Scholastic Art & Writing Awards and honorable mentions by the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers. The Alliance is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to identify students with exceptional artistic and literary talent. Sarah Jung ’20, Yongjin Park ’22, Mia Silberstein ’20, Sabrina Ticer- Wurr ’21, and Lukas Trelease ’20 won “Silver Key” awards, and Jinghuizi (Jing) He ’21 was awarded the highest regional honor—a “Gold Key” distinction for her poem, “Half Forgotten.” Oscar Depp ’21, Daisy Dundas ’21, and Isabella K.A. Albany Road Earns Highest Award in National Competition

Albany Road, the literary magazine from Deerfield Academy has been awarded REALM First Class, in the Recognizing Excellence in Art and Literary Magazines (REALM) Program of the National Council of Teachers of English. This is the top honor in this nationwide contest. This year, 358 literary magazines were submitted to this national competition for review. Of that number, 28 received the elite designation of REALM First Class.

Deerfield Jewish Student Alliance Holds Tree of Life Vigil

Members of the Deerfield community gathered for a candlelight vigil on Sunday evening to honor the lives of those lost in the senseless shooting that took place at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on October 27th, 2018. Student-members of the Jewish Student Alliance read remembrances about each of the 11 victims and led those gathered in the Mourner’s Kaddish prayer.
