Last Saturday, Deerfield competed in the 13th annual Northfield Mount Herman Girls Ultimate Tournament, and finished in second place!
In order to field a full and sustainable team in tournament play, Deerfield joined forces with Williston: seven Deerfield players – Annabelle Mauri, Claire Quan, Cynthia Lugo, Juliette Lowe, Madeline Lee, Maddy Beaubien, and Maya Laur – joined five Williston players to form one team. Despite having played as opponents earlier in the season, these twelve students played seamlessly together, developing a strong and coherent offense and defense.
The combined Deerfield and Williston team played four games over the course of the day. In the first game, the players beat Needham 7-6 in a sudden death overtime tiebreaker called “universe point” in ultimate. The girls gained even more confidence in one another for their second game and defeated Longmeadow 12-2. Then, the girls won their third game over Miss Porters 5-2, securing a bid to the championship game. Tired, but filled with good spirit, the girls played Amherst in the championship game and lost 2-7. With a 3-1 record, the team earned second place, and brought home a plaque for their efforts!
