Thank you Mr. Ahbel!

On Saturday, May 15 at the final track & field meet of the 2021 spring season, coaches and student-athletes honored Mr. Nils Ahbel, who has been the man behind the mic of Deerfield athletic contests for over 18 years while a faculty member at Deerfield.

Several Deerfield student-athletes presented Mr. Ahbel with tokens from their sports and the Big Green sports that he has announced and influenced over the years.

Football and track & field student-athletes Donnie Gray ’21 and Eli Ayomanor ’22 presented Mr. Ahbel with a game ball from the football team. Big Green swimming team member and track & field student-athlete, Greer Anderson ’22 presented him with a water bottle from the swim teams. Finally, track & field captains Jaxon Palmer ’21 and Grace Russell ’21 presented a track baton signed by the boys’ 4x100m team who recently broke the school record.

As a math teacher at Deerfield, several of Mr. Ahbel’s announcing statistics were shared during Saturday’s presentation. Mr. Ahbel has been announcing Deerfield football games for 18 years, swimming & diving meets for 13 years and track & field meets for 11 years during his tenure. Furthermore, Mr. Ahbel amassed almost 90 events announced over the years, which included over 40 football games, 33 swimming & diving meets and 16 track & field meets.

As Mr. Ahbel prepares to hand over the microphone, we wanted to take the opportunity to thank him for his service, commitment and dedication to Deerfield and our athletics teams. With our deepest gratitude, thank you Mr. Ahbel!
