Second Half Comeback Powers Football over Exeter

On Saturday, along with almost all of the Deerfield teams, the varsity football team traveled to Exeter to face the Big Red of Exeter. Deerfield scored 37 unanswered points in the second half to win their fourth straight game by a score of 37-14 over Phillips Exeter.

Entering halftime, the Big Green trailed the Big Red 14-0.

Deerfield’s first touchdown came on a fumble recovery in the third quarter by defensive end Garrett Alexander ’19 in the Exeter end zone.  Running back Griffin Schutz ’21 scored from nine yards out on the first play of the fourth quarter to tie the game 14-14.  The score remained deadlocked at 14-14 until four minutes left in the game when Exeter snapped the ball over the punters head for a safety.  Wide receiver Quinton Quirrenbach ’19 returned the ensuing kickoff for a touchdown to make the score 23-14.

Deerfield added two more scores by quarterback Jack Bill ’19 and running back Mamadou Meite ’19 to put an exclamation point on an exciting fourth quarter for the Big Green.

On the day, Deerfield blocked two punts and recovered three fumbles.  Defensive end Garrett Alexander had his best game of the season with three sacks and two fumble recoveries.  Defensive and offensive linemen, Jackson McCarty ’19 played every snap on both sides of the ball and controlled the line of scrimmage.

Up next, the Big Green will play at Andover on Sunday, October 28 at 1:30pm.
