With the beginning of the 2016 Fall Family Weekend, the Deerfield Athletics department would like to extend a warm welcome to all of our student-athletes’ families. Over the course of the next two days, there will be fifteen home games starting with girls reserve field hockey who will faceoff against Bement today at 4:00 PM. The final contest of the day will see our first varsity match of the weekend as girls varsity volleyball takes on Nobles at 6:00 PM. The team is led by senior captains Perry Hamm and Annie Roberts.
Saturday’s festivities will kick-off with a singing of the national anthem at 3:00 PM from under the flag pole on the south end of the football field. The performance will be set up with speakers so that it can be heard across all athletic fields. Shortly after, the competitions will get underway as varsity field hockey takes on Loomis at 3:00 PM looking to build on their strong start to the season as they have won five of their first seven games. On the gridiron, varsity football will also take on Loomis at 3:00 PM. In his first season as Head Coach, Mr. Barbato has led the team to a 2-1 start and hopes to build on last weekend’s 13-12 victory over Worcester Academy. Girls varsity soccer will be the final team to play Loomis on the day, also starting at 3:00 PM. After an up and down start to the season, the big green have won two straight and are excited for the challenge as they take on one of New England’s best.
Boys varsity soccer will battle it out with Hotchkiss starting at 3:30 PM. The team has showed great promise this year and senior goalkeeper Tim Gerber has helped the boys steal a couple of victories. The final varsity match of the weekend will also tip-off at 3:30 PM when varsity water polo welcomes Hotchkiss to the David H. Koch Natatorium. The boys put in a strong defensive performance last Saturday and will look to do the same this weekend after having a week between games.
A couple of DA teams will be on the road this weekend as the boys and girls cross country teams head to Wallingford, CT on Saturday to take on Loomis and hosts Choate. This meet will be a good test for both teams as they gear up for New England’s in a couple of weeks. Boys Jr.B soccer will also play off campus as they make the short trip to Eaglebrook on Saturday.
