On Wednesday, May 13, the US Squash community gathered virtually to honor this year’s junior squash award winners and congratulate the senior class. During the ceremony, senior boys varsity squash captain, Merritt Wurts was honored with the 2021 DeRoy Sportsmanship Award by US Squash.
The DeRoy Sportsmanship Award is presented to one male and one female senior who displayed exemplary on and off court behavior while competing at a high level of squash throughout their junior careers.
The virtual awards ceremony traveled to Deerfield, where boys varsity squash coach, Mike Silipo presented Merritt with the distinguished award.
Upon receiving the award from Coach Silipo, Merritt shared a few words that included, “I view sportsmanship as a form of respect for the sport we play.”
The ceremony also recognized this year’s graduating class of junior squash players which featured Deerfield seniors Isabella Rolfe and Charles Braff.
