Girls Skiing Finishes in 3rd at NEPSAC Championships; Individual Medal Finishes Highlight Event

The Deerfield girls varsity alpine skiing team earned 3rd place on Wednesday at the NEPSAC Class A Ski Championships co-hosted by Deerfield and NMH at Berkshire East Mountain. Despite a couple of on-course crashes, the boys team resiliently rallied individually to finish 10th overall as a team.

The girls 3rd place team finish (85 points) was paced by top-10 individual performances in both the slalom and giant slalom events. Kikka Guidice ’20 led the way for the Big Green girls earning the silver in the slalom (69.41) and the bronze in the giant slalom (100.3). Junior co-captain Valerie Hetherington ’19 rounded out the top-10 finishes for the girls, placing 7th in the slalom (73.72) and 9th in the giant slalom (102.73). Other Big Green scorers included; Madeline Carey ’19 who was 38th in the slalom and 26th in the giant slalom. Junior co-captain FJ March was 42nd in the slalom and 39th in the giant slalom and Claire Ott ’20 finished 48th in the slalom and 60th in the giant slalom.

The boys alpine ski team earned the 10th spot overall with individuals earning personal bests on the day.  Achille Sarachek ’21 earned the highest finish for the boys racing to 6th place in the slalom. JP Patton ’19 had a personal best day finishing 14th in the slalom and 10th in the giant slalom, besting his 2017 NEPSAC Championship outing by a combined total of 10 spots between the two events. Peter Sanford ’20 placed 34th in the slalom and 38th in the giant slalom while, Lawrence Von Steuben ’21 rounded out the scoring the Big Green finishing in 43rd place in the slalom at his first NEPSAC Championship.

The alpine ski team will close out their 2017-18 season this Wednesday, 2/21 at the 5th and final MISL race of the season hosted by Eaglebrook School. Currently, the boys team is in 2nd place and girls team is in 3rd place in the MISL team rankings. Furthermore, the Big green teams have 4 boys and 3 girls who sit in the top-13 in the individual rankings. On the boys squad, Garrett Alexander ’19 leads the way in 3rd place, Achille Sarachek is in 4th, JP Patton in 7th and Lawrence Von Steuben is in 12th. Kikka Guidice is the #1 overall racer on the girls side, she is followed by Valerie Hetherington at 11th and FJ Marsh at #13.
