Browne Scores 1000th Career Point; Deerfield Basketball Trio in the Liberty League

On December 30, 2017, Jesse Browne ’14 scored his 1000th career point for the Vassar Brewers with a win (91-74) against Marymount University at the College Park Classic in Washington, DC. Browne joined an elite group of Vassar student-athletes as the 15th Brewer in program history to reach 1,000 career points.

Browne, a senior guard at Vassar College and Captain of the Men’s Basketball team was a post-graduate student-athlete with the Big Green and earned NEPSAC All-League honors for his efforts during his post-graduate campaign at Deerfield.

Last season, Browne led his team in almost all categories while starting and playing in every game accumulating a total of 818 minutes played. He concluded his junior campaign with 338 points, which included 46 3-pointers and an impressive 66 assists. Browne matched his offensive efforts on the opposite end of the court, coming up with 7 blocks, 25 steals, and 90 rebounds.

Browne was named to the 2014-15 conference All-Rookie team. And during his sophomore season (2015-16), he was named to both the Liberty League Second Team and the All-Academic Team for his efforts on the court and in the classroom during.

This year in his senior campaign again as a captain, Browne leads the Brewers in minutes played at 852 and total points scored at 389, averaging 34.2 minutes per game and 15.6 points per game. Already surpassing his totals from a year ago. Furthermore, he’s ranked 7th in the league in scoring and 2nd in minutes played this season.

The Brewers’ 25 game regular season schedule, including non-conference and conference games, wrapped up on Saturday with the team’s win (66-54) over Ithaca.

Vassar College competes in the Liberty League conference, which is one of the premier conferences in the country for Division III basketball and home to more recent Deerfield basketball alumni including Jackson Mannix ’17 and David Gagas ’16.

Mannix is enjoying a successful freshmen season at Union College. The Dutchmen enter the post-season as the 2nd ranked team in the conference. To date, Mannix has played in 24 games this season notching 147 points, averaging 14.2 minutes played per game, and picking up 33 rebounds.

Gagas is in his sophomore campaign for the St. Lawrence Saints. He’s amassed 35 points this season and is 6th on the team with 11 steals while earning minutes in 22 games. The Saints closed out their season this past Saturday in a loss to Skidmore.

Browne will look to lead his team into the post-season as the 6th ranked Brewers will tip off against #3 RIT Tigers tomorrow, Tuesday, 2/20 at 7pm in the Liberty League conference quarterfinals. This season, the Brewers lost both of their earlier contests against the Tigers in close games, 63-54 and 61-57.
