The girls varsity basketball team returned to their home court on Saturday to tip-off against the Big Blue of Andover. From the opening whistle, the Big Green controlled the momentum and held the score advantage over the visitors for the win, 53-46.
Deerfield ‘s relentless full-court pressure helped them jump out to a commanding lead in the first 10 minutes of the game, holding Andover to just 5 points for most of the half. The teams entered halftime with Deerfield 12 points ahead at 26-14.
Andover clawed back in the second half and cut the lead to seven points in the final minutes of play. Evan Burkert ‘21 and Claire Cummings ’21 added valuable minutes off the bench for Deerfield, with Cummings pulling down 11 rebounds and contributing 10 points after a perfect 10-for-10 performance from the line.
Melissa Mitrovic ‘19 led all scorers with 12 points, and Emma Reavis ‘19 filled up the stats sheet with 10 points, 11 rebounds, 8 assists, and 6 steals.
Saturday’s win doubles the Big Green’s current winning streak to two games, which they will look to extend this Wednesday, 1/23 on the road at New Hampton. Tip-off is set for 4:00pm.
