Doors of the Week

Congratulations to our first winter 2022-2023 Doors of the Week!

Boys Varsity Squash: Youssef El Wabory ’25
In the opening match of the season vs. Hotchkiss, Youssef competed at the #5 spot on the ladder. He fell behind 0-2 to his Hotchkiss opponent then, rallied to come back to secure the victory in the fifth with a score of 11-6. Congrats Youssef!

Boys JV Squash: Matt Dillon ’23
Matt has played squash for several years at Deerfield. Now a senior, Matt is playing on JV and made a key contribution in the first week. During tryouts, Matt led the competitive environment with calm and kind leadership. He played hard with a desire to win while balancing fair play ansd warmth on court. In our first match, he was a late call up, hustled to the courts, and hopped on pretty soon after arrival. He pulled out a 3-2 victory after being down 1-2, again showing some younger players how to stay focused and positive. It’s great to have Matt’s maturity and leadership on this team.

Boys Varsity Hockey: Will Richards ‘23
Will Richards is our DOTW. Will scored his first goal of his career on Saturday, a culmination of all the hard work he put in this fall. Will has been a terrific teammate thus far and is leading us in all the right ways. Congrats to Will!

Girls Varsity Squash: Khadija Elhaddad ’26
Khadija played up a spot at #3 on the ladder in her first varsity match against Hotchkiss on Saturday and won a thrilling 3-2 victory for DA.  Although her opponent jumped out to a 2-0 game lead, Khadija never let down her effort.  She took control of the match in the third game by running her opponent around the court and then dug deep into her arsenal of shots to put the match away in the fifth.  A fantastic start for a ninth grader!

Girls Varsity Hockey: Mia Goetzke ’24
Mia Goetzke ’24 earned DOTW for Girls’ Hockey for her excellent performance in our season opener versus St. Marks. Mia has stepped into a leadership role within the offensive unit, playing with confidence and poise. In our first game Mia was instrumental in moving the puck and playing smart hockey in both zones. We’re excited about Mia’s growth in her past two years at Deerfield and are looking forward to her continued leadership the rest of the way!

Girls Varsity Basketball: Georgia Sackrey ’23
Our first athlete of the week is senior captain Georgia Sackrey.  She has shown great leadership in establishing a positive and supportive team culture in the first few weeks of the season.  She is inclusive and supportive of our new and younger team members, and she sets a stellar example daily of hard work and consistency.  She has grown steadily in her role since freshman year as a varsity team member, and she is poised and ready to lead this team in her senior season.

Varsity Wrestling: Josephine Louis ’23
The Varsity Wrestling Door of the Week is Josephine Louis ’23. Wrestling a quad-meet is grueling. Facing three opponents in one afternoon—after a long road trip—takes not only athleticism, endurance, and flexibility, but also great concentration, determination, and courage. On Wednesday, December 7th, Deerfield traveled to Pomfret School to face Pomfret, St. Mark’s School, and Buckingham Browne & Nichols. Jo suited up for the day, mentally prepared for three varsity matches and, as one of our three captains, leadership of the team. Against every opponent, she sprinted to the center, owned the whistle, and brought a superabundance of vision and grit. Though she didn’t prevail, she was the very personification of the DA Wrestling family’s values of purpose and humility. Jo’s a superb leader and a great grappler!

Girls Varsity Swimming & Diving: Elizabeth Kelly ’25
Elizabeth Kelly earned DAGVSD Door of the Week for her positive attitude, tenacious training, and resilient swims at our first meet. Elizabeth embraced the challenging task of getting into swimming shape with dedication all the while cheerfully supporting her teammates. Her hard work is already paying off with significant time drops in the 100 Fly over the course of just a few days! We are eager to see what Elizabeth does this year given her fortuitous start!

Go Big Green!
