On Saturday, the boys varsity soccer team earned their second consecutive win to start their 2024 season, the varsity volleyball team secured back-to-back home victories and the varsity field hockey team secured a shutout to post their first win of the season.
On Wednesday, the Big Green boys varsity soccer team hosted Avon Old Farms in their season opener at home and defeated the Winged Beavers 4-0. The squad returned to action on Saturday on the road against the Salisbury Knights. Felix Alfaro ’27 notched the first goal of the game for the Big Green in first ten minutes of the game. Shortly after, Stefan Flaska ’28 scored to double the Big Green lead.
Jack Dvorin ’25 opened the scoring in the second half to further the lead for the Doors. Salisbury registered their first goal of the game to cut the lead by a goal. Jonny Scagel ‘25 added two goals to the scoresheet for Deerfield to cap the scoring and the final score, 5-1 for the Big Green. With the victory, the Big Green improved their early season record to 2-0.
On Saturday, the Big Green varsity volleyball team hosted Austin Prep and NMH to serve up their fall 2024 season. In the opening match, the Big Green defeated Austin Prep in two straight sets and returned to the court to face NMH. Again, the Green and White secured a 2-0 victory to start their season with a 2-0 record.
Varsity field hockey secured their first victory of the season at home against visiting Berkshire. After a scoreless first quarter and some great saves by Izzy Kirby ’26, Chloe Cleaves ’26 (unassisted) and Lilly Oliver ’26 (from Peyton Wierl ’26) put the Big Green on the board in the second quarter. At halftime the Big Green held a 2-0 lead. The Doors capitalized again at the start of the third quarter on another goal from Oliver (assist from Wierl) and the game finished with a 3-0 win for Deerfield.
The boys and girls JV soccer teams each earned respective victories at home. The boys JV soccer team defeated visiting Suffield and the girls JV soccer team shutout Miss Hall’s in their first win, 4-0.
Boys water polo dropped their two opening games to Brunswick and Choate.
JV field hockey defeated Berkshire 1-0 on the road and thirds volleyball traveled to Suffield and defeated the Tigers, 2-0 (25-20, 25-11).
At home, varsity football fell to Williston, 21-34 and will look to rebound this Saturday on the road at Suffield.
On Saturday, the boys and girls cross-country teams hosted the Brush Invitational, an unscored friendly meet, to begin their season. In the boys 3k event, Deerfield dominated the race from the gun, with Leo Friedman, Arafat Jama, and co-captain Chas Arnold each running a smart race to claim the top three positions. In the boys 5k event, co-captain Aiden Van Epps, JT Gally, Liam Walker, Nico Pfiefler, and Quinn Clark ran tactically sound races to ease ahead of the competition.
Of the 29 runners from five different schools who competed in the girls’ 3K, the first 16 to cross the line were Deerfield runners to include two returning runners, Elizabeth Kelly and Tri-Captain Ginger Bernstein, who crossed the finish line with clasped hands, sharing first place in a show of friendship and speed. In the 5K race, Skye Georgiadis ’25 placed third and Liesel Stitch ’28 finished in sixth place.
