Boys Varsity Soccer Shuts Out Kent On Road to Victory

On Saturday, the Big Green shut out visiting Kent, 4-0 to earn the team’s second win of the season and second shut out on the year.

The game was back-and-forth for the first 12 minutes of play until Deerfield broke through with a goal from Kass Gifford ’23 off a beautiful through ball behind the defense from Edo Ferrari ‘22.

Ten minutes later, Deerfield would strike again from a cross delivered by Gavin Rigney ‘24 that found Jarvis Shema ‘23 on the back post. Jarvis wasted no time and finished in the side netting with his first touch.

The next 50 minutes saw great play and chances from both sides until Deerfield found the net again in the 80th minute. Jarvis Shema once again factored in as he broke in on the left side of the box and was taken down, drawing a penalty kick. Edo Ferrari stepped up and calmly buried the PK in the right side netting, giving Deerfield a commanding 3-0 lead with ten minutes left.

Deerfield would add an insurance goal two minutes later on a well-constructed play from Ocean Feng ’24 and Jarvis Shema, leading to a partial breakaway for Ian Choi ‘23. Ian attacked the goal with pace and was able to beat his defender on the left side for a beautiful left-footed finish. It was the icing on the cake for what was a full team effort from Deerfield, and everyone contributed in a meaningful way.

In goal, Kai Darrell ’23 along with the Deerfield defensive backline helped earn the shut out for the Big Green.

With Saturday’s win the Big Green improve and level their early season record at 2-2-2. Deerfield looks to keep the momentum going against an excellent Berkshire team at home on Wednesday, October 5 at 3:45pm. Can’t make it to campus for the game? Tune in to watch the game on livestream.
