On Saturday, in their final preseason scrimmage in Florida at IMG Academy, the baseball team earned a decisive 13-5 win over Inspiration Academy. A perfectly executed squeeze bunt in the bottom of the 6th inning by catcher Andy Pelc was the catalyst for what turned out to be a 10-run inning. The team finished the week with an overall record of 2-1-1.
The team opened up spring camp under the Florida sun with a 4-4 tie against Winter Park H.S., which they followed up with an 7-11 loss against IMG Academy (White). To close out the trip, they won their last two games 5-4 against IMG Academy (Gray) and 13-5 against Inspiration Academy. The Deerfield bats were connecting, pitching from the mound was strong and overall a great collective start for the Big Green! In total, Deerfield collected 40 hits and scored 29 runs in four games. 2B Jeff McDonald led the team with 8 hits over the 4 game stretch. RF Mike Bevino was right behind Jeff picking up 6 hits. The pitching staff got strong outings from Henry Gustavson and David Thomas in the 5-4 win over IMG Academy (Gray) and the combination of Jared Pantalony and Nick Solberg finished out the week in the 13-5 win.
