Athletes of the Week

Congratulations to this week’s Halloween Athletes of the Week!

Varsity Volleyball: Daphne Gavros ‘22

For varsity volleyball, this week’s athlete of the week is Daphne Gavros ‘22. Her impressive passing and serving are clear for everyone to see during games, but perhaps even more impressive is her willingness to spend time before and after practice working together with her teammates to fine-tune all of their volleyball skills. She holds herself and those around her to high standards and she sets a strong example of volleyball excellence for her teammates. Congratulations!

Boys Varsity Soccer: Peter Sanford ‘20

Peter Sanford is our choice for this week.  Peter is a fine goalkeeper who works hard day in and day out.  He supports his fellow goalkeeper and makes him better.  Peter is a team-first athlete and a real asset to the DA boys’ soccer program.

Girls JV Soccer: Claire Ott ‘20

This week’s JV Soccer Athlete of the Week is Claire Ott ’20. Claire has come back from a year abroad with a great attitude and energy, bringing every day to our team. Whether on the sidelines coming up with unique cheers, or communicating with her teammates on the field, Claire does a good job of being positive. As the season has progressed, so has Claire’s game. This was especially evident in our game against Andover, where she played with heart and speed. Despite rain and trying a new position, Claire worked hard the whole game, and season, and her efforts have not gone unnoticed!

Boys Water Polo: Jerry Huang ‘23

Swinging between the varsity and junior varsity games, Jerry Huang ’23 has assumed multiple roles.  With his younger teammates, he offsets the opposing team’s speed by getting back well on defense.  Playing with the varsity, he adds a shooter’s touch on the strong side of the goal.  He scored his first varsity goal last week in the game against Loomis.

Varsity Football: Luke Terry ‘20

Luke leads the team through his continued inspirational defensive efforts that yielded a second shutout performance in as many weeks.  Luke contributed with 2 interceptions and 9 tackles from his safety position this past week against Andover.  He is also a rockstar on our punt coverage team that has shifted momentum and field position this year.

JV Volleyball: Maddie Lee ‘20

JV Volleyball is fortunate to have Maddie Lee both as a captain and a player.  This past week Maddie showed her leadership skills in our game against Andover.  She was the most communicative and active player on the court, blocking and hitting balls that resulted in key points.  Maddie is always a positive force, never giving up and always cheering on her teammates.  Thanks Maddie!

Boys Jr. B Soccer: Jack Willett ’23 & Stephen Cooley ‘23

Our athletes of the week are Jack Willett and Stephen Cooley. Both players scored their first goals of the season today in our 5-1 win over Bement.

Girls Varsity Soccer: Molly Fischer ‘20

The varsity soccer Athlete of the Week is Molly Fischer. A four year member of the varsity soccer team and now in their senior year, Molly has shown tremendous growth on and off the field during her time at Deerfield. Molly sets an example with their work rate and “go-getter” attitude. Molly is always communicating with their teammates whether it be on the field or the sideline. We are thankful for Molly’s work ethic, tenacity, team-first attitude and passion for the game of soccer! Molly’s effort and contributions to the program are greatly appreciated and valued. Thank you, Molly!

Boys Jr A Soccer: Darien Chiang ‘23

Although he’s one of our youngest and smallest players, Darien has been part of the backbone of our team all season. A center midfielder, he frequently is matched up against other schools’ hockey and lacrosse players, who tower over him. Not only is Darien unintimidated, he’s extremely effective. He always goes hard to the ball, always thinks about the next pass before he even receives the ball, and never quits when he loses possession. His good nature is infectious at practice, where he always works hard with a smile on his face.

Varsity Field Hockey: Maddy Zavalick ‘22

The girls varsity field hockey AOTW is Maddy Zavalick ‘22. Maddy scored the game winning goal against Andover on Sunday when she buried a beautiful shot in the corner of the goal. She is a terrific player and teammate, always bringing positive energy and a fun attitude to practice and games. We value Maddy’s grit, smart play, and work ethic on the field and love coaching her. We look forward to her continued leadership in our remaining games!

Go Big Green!
