Athletes of the Week

Congratulations to this week’s Athletes of the Week!

Varsity Volleyball: Evan Burket ‘21

For varsity volleyball, this week’s athlete of the week is Evan Burkert ‘21. Evan had a fantastic game on Saturday against the Hopkins School, recording 10 kills along with 3 blocks to provide a key presence at the net. She has made impressive gains in recent weeks in her hitting timing and reading hits from the other side of the net and it showed in our match. Great work!

Boys Cross-Country: Chase Cherewatti ’22

After turning in a great string of practices last week, Chase had a significant breakthrough during our race at Loomis on Saturday.  He pushed himself throughout the race to run a lifetime best time and finish 7th in our lineup.  Way to go, Chase!

Girls Cross-Country: Ali Thomas ’21

Ali continued her season trend of improving from each week to the next at our race on Saturday.  She ran a smart race, balancing an aggressive start with smart, strategic racing throughout the 5K distance.  Ultimately, Ali was our #3 finisher and improved her time from the previous week by almost a full minute.  Way to go, Ali!

Boys Water Polo: Marwan Achi  ‘21

Taking on the challenge of defending the 2-meter player, Marwan Achi ’21 has anchored the team’s defense in recent games.  He positions himself well, communicates with his fellow defenders, and adjusts as the opposing team’s offensive possession unfolds. Most important, he plays with determination.

Girls JV Soccer: Lindsay Carey ’23

The Girls JV Soccer Athlete of the Week is Lindsay Carey, for her dependable defensive play all season long, but especially in the game vs. Loomis. Lindsay has been a player we can count on all season. She is often playing the entire game, and always coming up big when we need her to, with a speedy recovery, key clear, or smart pass. This was especially true against Loomis, when the Pelicans were taking advantage of holes in our midfield, Lindsay consistently shut them down in the defensive end. Thanks to Lindsay for all her hard work this season, and we look forward to her continued strong defensive play!

Reserve Field Hockey: Mary Blake Zeron ‘21

Mary Blake Zeron’21, one of our team captains, is a strong, fast and versatile player.  She is always a player of note, but this week, especially, she used her speed and steady stick skills in the midfield to create multiple turnovers and put the ball in the cage. We were impressed with her consistent ability to turn focus and tenacity into successful results. As if that weren’t enough, she’s also a genuinely kind and thoughtful person.  Thank you MB!

Boys Jr. B Soccer: Jack Willett ’23

We’d like to nominate Jack Willett as our  AOTW for quad squad. Very quietly, Jack is putting together a very solid season for us. He comes to practice every day, ready to work, and is willing to play wherever we need someone on the field. His improvement has been noticeable and we hope that he continues on this upward trajectory.

Boys Varsity Soccer: Luca Antongiovanni ’20

Luca’s leadership has shown throughout the season through both his joie de vivre in practices and as a serious competitor in our games.  Luca is back to full health and it is showing on the field.  Wherever he goes on the field he always draws attention from the opposing defense.  As a striker in our most recent match against Hotchkiss, Luca scored twice and assisted on the game winning 5th goal with just under 2 minutes left in the game!  Luca had made a great move past defenders towards the goal and had a shot, but he made the intelligent decision to pass the ball to the back of the net for a higher percentage shot by right back, Kade Goldberg, and Kade did not disappoint.  Game over!  That kind of intelligent play is something we have seen from Luca throughout the season.  It was a win for the ages and one in which the team can use to take their game to the next level in the second half of our season.

Varsity Field Hockey: Hannah Roche ‘21

The varsity FH AOTW is Hannah Roche ’21. Hannah consistently works hard at practice and in games to bring the level of play up. She is supportive of her teammates and is a strong, smart, and reliable presence in our midfield. Moreover, she has a rocket of a shot and consistently executes it well. Hannah loves the game and loves to win, and we love her competitive spirit! We look forward to her strong leadership on and off the field throughout the remainder of the season!

JV Volleyball: Emma Weech ’21

JV Volleyball had an outstanding week of play.  We had two big wins and, at both games, Emma Weech was instrumental.  As a 3-year member of the team Emma has confidence and skill.  In our game against Hopkins, our longest game of the year, Emma was the last server and she, with her steadiness and skill,  brought us back from a 3 point deficit to a 2 point advantage and a win in our 5th Set.  The stakes were high and, as always, Emma came through for us!

Girls Varsity Soccer: Kelly Howe ‘22

Kelly Howe is the girls varsity soccer athlete of the week. All season, Kelly has made an immediate impact when she steps onto the field whether it be in games or on the practice field. With her controlled touch, composed presence, and vision, she creates opportunities both for herself and her teammates. She is a competitor and team player, willing to step into any role that she is given. Furthermore, she notched the game-winning goal in the team’s first win of the season at St. Paul’s. Kelly loves to play soccer and her positive and hardworking attitude are contagious! We look forward to Kelly’s continued growth and impact throughout the rest of the season!

Boys Jr. A Soccer: Songa Rwamucyo, ‘23

Songa has outstanding touch and finesse and can make the ball seem like an extension of his foot. He’s our team’s leading scorer to this point, and each goal has been a work of art, including Sunday’s free kick at Hotchkiss that he somehow snuck under a wall of defenders and the keeper. But what makes Songa a leader on our team, even as a ninth grader, is that he never rests on his talent. He works hard and stays focused every minute of the game—and during scrimmages and drills, too.  And his humility, sense of humor, and good-natured competitiveness have helped build a great team culture.

Go Big Green!
