Congratulations to this week’s Athletes of the Week! Read all about their team contributions below.
Varsity Softball: Meaghan O’Brien ‘18
For pitching a perfect game against Taft, Meaghan O’Brien is softball’s athlete of the week. She also had two doubles and was intentionally walked. Her dominance in that game lead us to victory. She also could get athlete of the week most weeks by giving 110% every day. She exemplifies what it means to work hard and be selfless on the field.
JV Baseball: Crawford Rice ‘21
The JV Baseball team would like to nominate Crawford Rice as the AOTW. Crawford had a huge RBI single in our one-run win against Cushing on Wednesday and then had an important sacrifice fly to tie the game against NMH on a frigid Friday afternoon game. He has improved tremendously as an outfielder and a hitter in the first few weeks of the season. His combination of humility and cheerful optimism make him a wonderful addition to our squad.
Girls Rowing: Claire Cummings ‘21
Claire Cummings is girls’ rowing’s Athlete of the Week. She is a hard worker, and goes through all of practice with a smile on her face. Even after hard pieces on the water she stops to give us all helpful advice, and always looks to help those around her. Even with a back injury, she came to practice ready to row and give her best. Finally, she puts a smile on all our faces with her great sense of humor. Thanks Claire for teaching us how to shoot dance. Rock on!
Varsity Baseball: Mike Bevino ‘18
Mike Bevino is the varsity baseball AOTW. Mike was 5-7 in Saturday’s doubleheader split with Providence Country Day. Mike scored 6 runs and had 4 RBI’s in the doubleheader. He also continues to play a flawless right field and has exhibited tremendous leadership qualities throughout this spring.
Girls Varsity Lacrosse: Olivia Jones ‘18
Olivia Jones is the girls varsity lacrosse athlete of the week. Olivia has served as a critical anchor of our defensive unit and has demonstrated outstanding leadership in her position. Olivia’s performance was particularly strong in our Parents’ Weekend contest against Taft.
Varsity Track & Field: Declan Cullinane ‘21, Colin Olson ‘19, Noelle Abeyta ‘21, Lily Louis ‘18, Helen Downes ‘18, and Victoria Patterson ‘20
Boys: Declan Cullinane and Colin Olson. Declan and Colin stayed to the bitter end of the Hunt Relays on Saturday, several hours after they finished their events, to help retrieve discuses during the girls’ discus competition. They encouraged all the competitors from every team and contributed to a successful and smooth conclusion of the meet. Bravo, Declan & Colin!
Girls: The Girls Distance Medley Relay Team (Noelle Abeyta, Lily Louis, Helen Downes, and Victoria Patterson). These four girls raced to a convincing victory in a loaded DMR field including Exeter and Andover, and in the process, they set a new Deerfield record for the Distance Medley Relay. Congratulations to all four girls!
Boys Rowing: Alex Leong ‘20
Despite being new to the sport this spring, Alex has quickly connected with the work ethic and culture of the boathouse. He has made great strides each week and his dedication to both his own development and that of his teammates has been outstanding to see. As an example of his selfless commitment, this past Saturday, when doing hill repeats, Alex finished his set, but continued to charge up the hill, doing extra work, until all of his teammates had finished theirs. Keep up the great work, Alex!
Boys JV Tennis: David Chen ‘20
David Chen has been a dedicated member of the JV Boys Tennis team, and he really stepped up on Saturday against a very tough Andover squad. He was asked to play up in both doubles and singles and responded with a tenacious performance in both matches. David’s work in the off-season has really paid-off this year in making him a valuable member of the program.
Girls Varsity Water Polo: Ashley Stewart ‘20
A graduate of instructional swimming last spring, Ashley Stewart ’20 has taken on the challenge of playing varsity water polo, a sport that strains skilled swimmers. Ashley works hard each day to learn the game, improve her endurance, and test her limits. Her teammates and coaches respect her commitment to the demands.
Boys Varsity Tennis: Alfi Auersperg ‘19
Alfi went undefeated in a busy week for boys’ tennis: 2-0 in doubles and 3-0 in singles against Loomis, Andover, and NMH. Against Andover, he handily defeated their talented #1 player, who was ranked a full UTR level above Alfi, by a score of 6-2, 6-1. We hope Alfi continues his winning streak as we play seven matches in fifteen days this May.
Girls JV Lacrosse: Olivia Geraci ‘19
Olivia had continued to be a leader on and off the field. After the team was told that we needed to do better on the draw against Taft, she attacked to get control of the ball. She was instrumental in a dominant win with many parents in the crowd. Olivia gives her full effort every practice and game and that is why she is this weeks JV lax girls athlete of the week.
