Coach Jan (pronounced “yawn”) is an avid athlete and coach, promoting the notion of playing any game you can, anywhere and all the time. He played three sports at Bowdoin College – soccer, ice hockey and lacrosse – and served as a three-season captain. Coach Jan has a B license from the US Soccer Association, and an Advanced National Diploma from the United Soccer Coaches Association. Coach Jan has coached soccer at many schools, including Deerfield Academy and the University of Chicago, and at many clubs, including his favorite international club, MŠK Žilina, a small club in central Slovakia with a huge impact on European soccer. Jan is the head coach of the Slovak National Lacrosse team – and a former player for that team. Coach Jan serves Deerfield Academy as a teacher in the Philosophy and Religious Studies Department, the Dean of Spiritual Life, and as the assistant varsity boys ice hockey coach, and as the assistant varsity boys lacrosse. In the summers, Jan coaches tennis and manages high school and college students at a coastal community near Damariscotta, Maine.
