Trip leader, Justin Romick, shares the groups day in Cassis.
After many hugs and tearful goodbyes, we finally left Arles on Sunday morning to make our way onto the next stages of our journey to Cassis, Marseille, and Paris. On a day full of sunshine we happily made our way to the Cote d’Azur. Once we arrived in Cassis, students had the option to either explore the picturesque town of Cassis or hike the rugged limestone paths of the nearby, coastal calanques. The group split in two, one half headed to town, the other half into nature. The beauty of Cassis and its surrounding areas is impossible to fully describe: deep valleys and vaulting cliffs meet the Mediterranean in dynamic juxtaposition. The color blue becomes a multichrome sensation as the water and sky offer numerous and beautiful iterations. For those who chose to hike, the path was difficult but rewarding. After climbing several hills the hiking group finally reached a beautiful beach cove sheltered by towering limestone cliffs on each side. The town group explored the boutiques, ice cream shops, and beaches within Cassis. Our first experience with France’s dynamic southern edge was full of beauty and wonder as the group is ready to explore further as we reach Marseille.
