All participants will be asked to acknowledge this information as part of the CIEE enrollment process

2. Travel Medicine Advisory Letter from Dr. Benson

3. Vaccination Information: Please review the full letter above from Dr. Benson

  • Japanese Encephalitis (JE) – highly recommended

    • Consider receiving the Japanese encephalitis (JE) vaccine.
    • JE is a potentially fatal viral illness spread by mosquitoes found in China..
    • Most travel medicine practitioners do not recommend this vaccine for trips that are less than a month’s duration and do not involve substantial time outdoors in rural or agricultural areas.  However, the decision about the JE vaccine is a personal one.
    • Regarding Japanese Encephalitis in China, the CDC states the JE virus is found in areas included on this trip’s itinerary and peak season for JE is June through October.
  • Vaccination coverage and cost:

    • We recommend that you contact your health insurance provider to inquire about vaccine coverage and costs. Japanese Encephalitis: approximately $600 (less if reimbursed by insurance) for the two dose vaccine series.

4. Insurance Information:

  • Deerfield Academy provides students with International SOS Travel Insurance during the program.
    • CLICK HERE for general information about Internation SOS Travel Insurance, the service they offer and HERE for information on how to get in touch with them pre-travel.
    • Deerfield Academy also encourages Students and Parents to consider purchasing additional “cancel for any reason” insurance as available.

Visa Information:

Students and parents are directly responsible for the student’s immigration status and/or visa application process to comply with local laws for participation in this program. Deerfield Academy and the CSGC office are here to assist and can provide specific supplemental documentation as required for the application.

Pre- trip Plans:

Please note that the school year ends on Monday, May 26th and this trip does not begin until June 1st*

*Please note that the program start date has been slightly altered due to the timing of flights.

On June 1st, Students will have the option of meeting the Trip Leaders at the DA Campus Infront of the MSB at 4:00PM and taking a bus to Boston OR meet the group at the Comfort Inn & Suites Logan International Airport (85 American Legion Hwy, Revere, MA 02151) at 6:00PM.

The group will spend the night at the hotel together before waking up early to head to the Logan Airport (BOS) and depart on their flight to Shanghai at 5:35AM.

Post -trip Plans:

Please note that this trip ends on June 25th at the Beijing Airport (PEK). Students are estimated to arrive back in Boston (BOS) with an estimated time of arrival at 2:10PM. Families should plan for this accordingly and as you see in the form, there are a few options:

• The student’s family or friend of the family can pick them up at the airport.

• The student can fly to another city to meet their family or friend of the family.

If you decide on the second option, it is important to start planning for this now and ensure that students have enough time between when the group lands at BOS and when their next flight takes off. Things to consider are potential delays, customs and immigration, baggage claim, and possible terminal transfers. We recommend contacting the airlines directly to ensure appropriate layover times (taking into account the possibility of delays). If you have questions or require help with this process, please let us know.

Payment Information:

The remaining balance of the program fee will be billed to your student account on December 11, 2024, and due in full by January 1, 2025.
