With the CSGC summer grant, I am going to mentor young children in my community about how to cook. Cooking has always been a passion of mine, especially cooking healthy meals. Home cooked meals are cheaper and healthier options for families. However, schools do not usually teach students how to cook. With this grant, I am going to have two, three-hour workshops, in which adolescents ages 8-16 will attend. In these workshops, I will discuss healthy eating habits, explain food safety, then prepare a healthy meal to cook and eat for lunch. In these workshops, I will be working with children and adolescents from Western Massachusetts. The workshops will take place at my old school, Hopkins Academy, on August 14 and 15.

For me, this grant will be successful if students leave these workshops knowing basic cooking skills, including food safety and preparation, all while keeping health in mind. The two meals that I am hoping to prepare with the kids are homemade pizza on day one and chicken bowls on day two. Please email adyjach24@deerfield.edu if you know a person within the age range who would like to participate!
