Michael ’26, looks to “address the disparity in academic support and opportunities” in his home town.

My project helps address the disparity in academic support and opportunities in my hometown. A third of the students in the middle school are Spanish first language students who might be helped by some academic support. I am utilizing the money from my grant to assist in the volunteer tutoring I and a team I assembled of Deerfield, and Lawrenceville students will be doing. The money will go to textbooks to help us teach these students, along with graphing calculators and other supplies necessary. I struggled for a few weeks as the head of the middle school who previously told me many students would benefit from this tutoring could not put me in contact with these students due to needing BOE approval and fingerprinting. I tried for another couple weeks, and eventually connected with the students through the Children’s Museum of the East End. We found students in need of extra academic support and are starting tutoring next week!
