Dance Classes for Children with Autism

Josie ’26, looks to encourage more inclusivity for autistic youth in her community through free dance classes.

My project focuses on providing dance classes for children with autism in my community. Children with autism are often excluded from traditional dance classes, which prevents them from having the opportunity to experience the joy of dancing to music. My goal is to organize classes, with a target enrollment of five students. Their ages will range between eight and twelve. The grant will help me reach the following goals:

  1. Hiring qualified teachers. A ballet teacher is necessary, but so is a teacher with specialized training and experience in working with children with autism. I have found and contacted both dance teachers and have had meetings discussing further plans.
  2. Dance studio. One challenge I have faced is finding space. The space must meet the needs of the kids. A portion of the grant will go towards renting a suitable dance studio that is safe, accessible, and conducive to their learning.
  3. Snacks/drinks. I will take directions from an expert and the parents of the attendees of what snacks and drinks can be provided.

I will also have volunteers around my age helping in the class. Each volunteer will be paired with an autistic student, providing each one with one-on-one support. The teacher will lead a training session prior to the first class, either in person or on zoom, to ensure that the volunteers are prepared to help the kids attending the class.

I am hoping this project sets an example within the community, encouraging more inclusivity for children with autism.
