Audrey ’26 and Charlotte ’25, collaborate with their local farmers market to help spread sustainability education within the youth community in their hometown.
Our project involves sustainability education for youth in Chicago. By collaborating with and volunteering at our local farmers market for their kids activity, Club Sprouts, we are able to teach kids of all ages about the importance of eating sustainably, trying new foods, and shopping locally. By doing this, we hope to contribute and help address the lack of climate education and create a more well informed community.
So far, we have volunteered weekly for the kids activity throughout the summer and plan to use the grant money to create our own activity similar to the one pictured in the photo. We set up the activity pictured with 3 types of blueberries from various vendors around the market so that children could try each one and choose their favorite. From there, we encouraged them to consider purchasing some blueberries with their one dollar token they received to support the farmers. Our goal is to use our grant to create a similar activity centered around sustainability education in partnership with the farmers market.
