In a match-up of #2-seeded Deerfield and #5-seeded Loomis, it was the Big Green who got the win, 3-0. The victory makes Deerfield the back-to-back 2022 NEPSGVA Class A Champions!
Deerfield got out to an initial lead in the first set on serving from Caroline Weller ‘23 and Georgia Sackrey ‘23, pushing the lead as far as 6-2. Loomis came right back with a run of their own to keep it tight and then out to a lead of 9-11 on their strong blocking. After a Deerfield timeout, the Big Green hitters started to find holes in the blocks and were able to re-take the lead at 17-15 to force a Pelican timeout. Cate Shanahan ‘23 and Weller did a great job on the outside, Sackrey and Harmoni Dobbins ‘26 put up their own blocks in the middle, and Evie Mokarow ‘24 and Evelyn Kunde ‘26 were effective in blocking and hitting from the right side. Serve receive and defense were outstanding from Zoe Gavros ‘23 and Elle Stearns ‘23. Another service run from Sackrey pushed Deerfield out to a lead which they would maintain to the finish, 25-19.
In the second frame, Deerfield started to establish more control of the net game but a number of missed serves kept the score tight. Setters Meghan Holland ‘23 and Wuyee Ke ‘26 did a great job moving the ball around to our balanced attack and Ke had an outstanding block near the end of the set before Deerfield closed the set, 25-21.
The third set was all Deerfield as Weller served Deerfield out to an opening 10-0 lead that showcased great hitting from Shanahan, Sackrey, and Kunde along with excellent defense from Gavros. Holland’s service run took Deerfield out to a lead of 17-5 (including an outstanding combo play with Holland, Shanahan, and Mokarow). The final point came on a serve from Sackrey and a kill from Shanahan to give Deerfield the win, 25-11.
Our entire squad made today’s win possible; we get to play excellent volleyball everyday within our team and that friendly competition makes everyone better players for when we put on the Deerfield jerseys.

We are very fortunate to have such incredible support as a volleyball program. Huge appreciation to everyone in the Athletics Department and to all the students, faculty, and staff who supported us throughout the season and during the playoffs. This is a really special team who loved playing together and supported each other throughout the season. It has been such a privilege to come to the gym each day to work with this group. To our seniors: thank you for establishing such an incredible tradition and culture of support and excellence upon which future Deerfield teams can build. Thank you for such an amazing season!!!

This season, the Big Green posted an overall record of 18-1. Making this year’s team, the most successful Deerfield volleyball team in recent memory.
