Varsity Baseball Shuts Out Cushing; Raise Awareness for “Slam the Door on Cancer” Campaign

This past weekend the Big Green shut out Cushing in their home-and-away game series with the Penguins; earning a 5-0 and 13-0 shut out over their opponent. During Saturday’s home contest several members of the varsity baseball team organized and awareness campaign called “Slam the Door on Cancer.”

In their first meeting with the Penguins in Ashburnham, MA on Friday, May 14, senior co-captain Tyler Mudd was dominant on the mound; he struck out 15 batters and only allowed 2 hits.

First baseman, Sam Mackenzie ’21, center fielder Geoffrey Jamiel ’22 and left fielder Tynan Creagh ’22 each earned a hit and an RBI for the Big Green to secure the 5-0 victory.

Less than 24 hours later, the Big Green returned home to Headmaster’s field for their second meeting of the season with the Penguins. The Big Green bats came alive early in the game and they never looked back. A few of the game highlights included; catcher Trey Bourque ’21 hitting a Grand Slam in the bottom of the 4th inning. First baseman Caleb Kirkpatrick ’24, outfielder Nyle Kamil ’22, and outfielder Kiernan Keller ’22 all had their first multi hit game of the season. Four different Deerfield pitchers contributed to the shut out effort on the mound, preserving the shutout and securing the 13-0 victory.

With three games remaining in their 2021 season, the Big Green hold a 5-5-1 record. Up next the Big Green, will face Taft tomorrow, Wednesday, May 18 at 4:30pm on Headmaster’s Field. Their final games are against Suffield this Saturday, May 22 in a double header against the Tigers.
