Swimming Sweeps at NMH

On Wednesday, the boys varsity swimming and girls varsity swimming teams swept NMH; collectively amassing 16 first place finishes out of 22 events to secure the victories. The final scores were; Deerfield boys 96 to NMH 72 and the Deerfield girls earned 101 points to NMH’s 68.

The Big Green did not waste any time collecting points in the 22 event meet, which did not include a diving competition.

The girls team quickly earned their first of ten first place finishes in their opening race, the 200 yard medley relay. The relay team of Izzy Hamlen, Rachel Mark, Niki Pelletier and Darcy del Real finished with a time of 1:57.69 to collect eight points for their team. In the same race, the Big Green team of Maggie Tydings, Charlotte Otis, Caroline Mahony and Katie Lawrence finished in third place to earn two team points. The third Big Green team of Cam Howe, Lourdes Klem, Allison Xia and Olivia Konar finished in fifth place.

In the ensuing race, the Deerfield boys team followed a similar path and topped their NMH opponents by finishing in first, third and fourth place in the race. The first place team of Robert Amundson, Cyrus Salmassi, Thatcher Smith and Teddy McCarthy clocked in at 1:46.26 and collected eight team points for the win. The third place team of Jerry Huang, Mason Zhao, Declan Cullinane and Mark Cai was edged by .04 seconds at the wall by NMH. The third finishing Deerfield team which included members; Hudson McGuinness, Peter Osbourne, Marwan Gideon Achi, and Stone Anderson earned fourth place.

The Big Green teams continued with comparable results in the following 20 events of the meet.

In the girls 200 yard freestyle, three Big Green swimmers collected points. Rachel Mark finished first, Charlotte Otis was third and Greer Anderson touched the wall in fifth place. The Deerfield boys also had three swimmers collect points in the 200 yard freestyle. John O’Loughlin earned second place, Sean Kim finished in fourth place and Justin Seo was fifth.

Niki Pelletier captured first and teammate Maggie Tydings finished in third place in the 200 yard IM. For the boys, Mason Zhao was first and he was followed by Cyrus Salmassi and Marwan Gideon Achi in second and fourth respectively.

In the quick 50 yard freestyle race, both the girls and boys teams’ had three finishers earn points. For the girls, Izzy Hamlen finished first, Caroline Mahony followed by .02 seconds in second place and Aim Poonsonsornisiri finished in fourth place. On the boys side, Thatcher Smith captured first, Mark Cai finished in second and Stone Anderson was fifth.

In the 100 yard butterfly event, Izzy Hamlen earned another first place finish, Charlotte Otis was fourth and Jing He finished in sixth place. The Deerfield boys finished back-to-back-to-back in this race; Cyrus Salmassi was first, Robert Amundson was second and Marwan Gideon Achi was third.

Finishing in third place, Aim Poononsornsiri earned her highest individual finish of the day in the girls 100 yard freestyle. Teammates, Angela Cui and Greer Anderson finished in fourth and sixth respectively. John O’Loughlin led the way for the Big Green in the boys 100 yard freestyle race by finishing in second. Justin Seo and Hudson McGuiness finished in fourth and fifth respectively.

The Big Green continued with more first place finishes in the second half of the meet. In the 500 yard freestyle, three Deerfield girl swimmers earned points; Caroline Mahony, Rachel Mark and Cam Howe were first, second and fourth respectively. In the boys event; Thatcher Smith, Mark Cai, and Sean Kim were first, second and fifth.

Returning to a relay event, the 200 yard freestyle relay, the girls team of Niki Pelletier, Izzy Hamlen, Aim Poonsonsornsiri and Caroline Mahony took first place and teammates, Lourdes Klem, Jing He, Olivia Konar and Cam Howe finished in fifth. The two Deerfield boys relay teams finished in first and third place in the 200 yard freestyle. The first place team included swimmers; Robert Amundson, Teddy McCarthy, John O’Loughlin and Sean Kim. The third place team swimmers were Marwan Gideon Achi, Stone Anderson, Justin Seo, and Peter Osbourne.

The Deerfield girls added another nine points to their total in the 100 yard backstroke; Maggie Tydings finished first, Angela Cui was fourth and Lourdes Klem clocked-in in fifth place. The boys team also earned another nine points in their event; Mason Zhao finishing in second, Declan Cullinane was third and Hudson McGuiness finished in fourth place.

Niki Pelletier claimed first place in the 100 yard breaststroke, teammates Nafi Sall and Jing He finished in third and fifth respectively in the same event. For the boys 100 yard breaststroke, Robert Amundson was the first Deerfield finisher in third place, teammates Jerry Huang and Peter Osbourne finished in fourth and fifth place respectively.

Heading into the final races of the meet, the Big Green had the victories already locked up, but continued to compete.

In the girls 400 yard freestyle relay, the team of Katie Lawrence, Aim Poonsonsornsiri, Charlotte Otis and Rachel mark finished in first place. The final two Deerfield relays teams of Greer Anderson, Angela Cui, Jing He, Allison Xia, Olivia Konar, Maggie Tydings, Nafi Sall and Lourdes Klem earned fourth and fifth place. On the boys side, the three Deerfield relay teams raced for fun instead of points.

With Wednesday’s victorie, both the boys and girls swimming and diving teams improve their season record to 3-3.

The Big Green will return to their home pool this Saturday, 2/1 against Andover. The meet is scheduled to start at 2:00pm. If you can’t make it to campus, you can tune in to watch the LIVESTREAM.
