Katy Gilbert ’20 – Stanford University (Women’s Lacrosse)
Katy Gilbert ’20 arrived to Deerfield in the fall of 2019 for a post-graduate year with the Big Green after a successful career and exceptional senior campaign at Lake Oswego High School in Lake Oswego, Oregon. Katy finished her senior year at Lake Oswego with 55 goals and 36 assists in 22 games on the lacrosse field, helping her team advance to the state championship game after winning the Tri-Rivers League Championship. She was named Tri-Rivers Player of the Year, All-American, academic All-American and received All-State first team honors. Furthermore, she was tabbed the Prep Girls Lacrosse Player of the Year presented by the Oregon Sports Awards. In the summer prior to her senior year, Katy shifted her focus from college basketball recruitment to lacrosse. Entering the lacrosse recruiting process late, Katy opted for another year of preparation at Deerfield. For the Big Green, Katy was a varsity starter and impact player for the girls varsity soccer and girls varsity basketball teams. This spring, Katy’s third season for the Big Green on the lacrosse field was cut short due to the Covid-19 pandemic. We look forward to seeing Katy back on the lacrosse field next spring where she will continue her athletic endeavors at the Stanford University in the PAC-12. We are looking forward to tuning in to the PAC-12 network to watch Katy in action next spring. Good luck, Katy!

What they are saying about Katy:
“Katy is the consummate student-athlete, excelling and leading both on the court and in the classroom.  In the English classroom, she contributed to discussions with empathy and wit, and she wrote thoughtful prose, both creative and analytical.  On the basketball court, she ran our offenses with confidence and ease, and she set the highest example for her teammates of sportsmanship and athleticism.  Katy was often given the hardest defensive assignment, and she never took a play off or gave up, even in our toughest games; she actually brought us back from behind on several occasions with her exquisite ball-handling, hustle on transition defense, or clutch shot.  She is one of the best point guards we have ever had at Deerfield, and she earned the utmost respect of her teammates and coaches throughout our season.  Naming her Most Valuable Player this season was an easy decision, and I am eager to follow her college career in lacrosse at Stanford.”
-Julie Schloat, Deerfield Girls Varsity Basketball Coach

“Katy is a wonderful person and has always been a great role model in our advising group!”
-Margaret Brown, Health Issues Teacher & Katy’s Advisor

“I will always remember meeting Katy for the first time on the first day of soccer preseason in the fall of 2019; she had the biggest smile on her face. Her smile was filled with excitement and an eagerness to play! As our season progressed I quickly learned that Katy’s smile along with her positive attitude and pursuit of competitive greatness were always present. Katy possesses remarkable athleticism however, her athleticism is matched, if not surpassed, by her commitment and work ethic to being the best possible athlete and teammate. Katy always looked to implement coaching feedback into her game and selflessly put her team first. I am so proud of all that Katy has achieved during her time at Deerfield and look forward to continuing to watch Katy grow and compete at Stanford!”
-Carly Barbato, Deerfield Girls Varsity Soccer Coach

“While the Deerfield lacrosse team wasn’t fortunate enough to have Katy on the turf this spring, the entire community had the opportunity to witness her tenacious style of play and team first attitude through both her soccer and basketball endeavors. As her dorm resident and I can speak to her wonderful attitude and dedication toward all of her commitments. I know she will achieve great success at Stanford both in and out of the classroom and wish her the best of luck.”
-Allison DiNardo, Deerfield Girls Varsity Lacrosse Coach
