Joe Fernando ’15 Signs with San Diego Padres

On March 8, Joe Fernado ’15 signed as a shortstop with the San Diego Padres of Major League Baseball and will report for the Padres training camp in Phoenix, AZ, next month.

In 2019, Joe graduated from Bethune-Cookman University where he garnered MEAC All-Conference 1st Team and All-Academic honors in his senior season with the Wildcats. He was recognized as the Bethune-Cookman University Most Valuable Player in addition to receiving the “Iron Cat” award, bestowed to the best athlete at Bethune-Cookman.

Last spring, he led the conference in hits with 68 and paced the Wildcats in average (.324), doubles (11) and total bases (93), home runs (4), stolen bases (15) and at-bats (210). Furthermore, he was the only player on his team to play and start all 55 games during his senior campaign.

In 2018 he was named to the MEAC All-Conference 3rd team. In his junior year, Joe played in 46 games and started 36 of those. At the end of the season, he held a .281 average, was third on the team with seven doubles, tied for second with a pair of triples, and was second among infielders with a .940 fielding percentage.

Prior to becoming a student-athlete at Bethune-Cookman, Joe attended Northeastern Oklahoma A&M.

Joe graduated from Deerfield in 2015 as a post-graduate student-athlete.
