On Saturday, the girls and boys varsity hockey teams opened their season at home in the Class of 1993 Rink in a hockey double-header; both teams secured their first win of the season. The girls varsity hockey team led the way with a 3-1 victory over St. Mark’s and boys varsity hockey rallied from behind to defeat Groton, 5-2.
The girls varsity hockey team kicked off the 2023-2024 season with a 3-1 win against St. Mark’s on Saturday afternoon. The Big Green controlled the pace and play for most of the game, and generated excellent scoring chances in all three periods. Olivia Austen ’27 registered the team’s first goal (and her first Deerfield goal) in the first period with a beautiful unassisted snipe, and after St. Mark’s tied the score off of a strange bounce in front, Bailey Miller ’24 restored the lead again on a great second effort (assist to Gia Thompson ’26). Taylor Wilburn ’27 rounded out the scoring on a nice shot from the point (assists to Annie Dinges ’24 and Sophie Frost ’26), and Campbell Krotee ’25 earned the win in goal.
Julia Tamul ’25 had tremendous effort on the forecheck all afternoon long, and Ava Giroux ’26 earned the hard hat for modeling what hard work and grit looks like.
The Big Green boys varsity hockey game followed and they too sealed their first win of the season 5-2 over Groton. Justin Tavares ’25 inked the scoresheet first to put the home-side ahead. Groton responded scoring two consecutive goals to give the visitors the lead, 2-1. From this point, the Big Green controlled the scoresheet. Justin Tavares (assists to Tom Molson ’24 and Jakub Kohn ’24) scored the equalizer to make the score 2-2.
In the third period, Lance Roberts ’25 (assists to Cam Herr ’24 and Nate Watson ’26) scored the go-ahead goal. Then, Nate Watson (assists to Tavares and Zachary Chehade ’25) doubled the Big Green lead with his first goal of the season. Finally, Tavares rounded out the scoresheet sealing his own hat trick with an empty-net-goal (assist to Molson) to secure the team’s victory.
John Tolve ’24 earned the win in goal for the Big Green.
Both teams with 1-0 early season records will return to action this week. First, the girls varsity hockey team will face off against Loomis this Wednesday, 12/6 in Windsor, CT. Puck drops at 3pm.
