Saturday, 1/6 vs. The Hill School
We played a good first period, and finally converted when Elizabeth Hernberg ‘18 scored on the penalty kill off of a strong forecheck by Mae Emerson ‘19. We found ourselves in the penalty box for most of the second period, but Christina Halloran ‘20 scored on a rebound from a Mary Edmonds ‘19 shot (second assist to Erin DeMarco ‘19), and then Edmonds rounded out the scoring with a goal of her own. The third period was sloppy, but Jordan Manning ‘19 made a few good saves to preserve the shutout.
Sunday, 1/7 vs. Lawrenceville School
To start the game, Lawrenceville dominated the play and won every battle along the boards. They scored first on the power play, but we were able to tie the score after excellent work down low by Mae Emerson ‘19 and Elizabeth Hernberg ‘18. Hernberg faked the goalie, and then slipped the puck over to Emerson, who made no mistake in finding the back of the goal. We knew that we were lucky to escape the period tied at 1, and vowed to play harder in the second. To our credit, the second period was a completely different story. We pushed the pace all over the ice, and put 15 shots on the Lawrenceville goal. Christina Halloran ‘20 scored on a beautiful redirection off a Mary Edmonds ‘19 pass, and that held up as the winning goal. All of our defensemen played strong games: Ali Dougal ‘18, Deirdre Mullowney ‘19, Erin DeMarco ‘19, Aurora Devereaux ‘20, Ali Fujiyoshi ‘19, and Haley Sundstrom ‘21, and Liv Mikesell ‘20 was very solid in goal. Halloran deserves mention for her work in the dying seconds: she possessed the puck in the offensive corner for more than 30 seconds, fending off all of Lawrenceville’s players. Overall, this team won 3 road games this week: no easy feat. They also remained focused and committed despite long hours on the bus, and earned themselves a day off from practice on Monday!
Many thanks to Lawrenceville Head of School (and former Deerfield faculty member), Mr. Murray, for the delicious pregame meal!
The Big Green will carry their momentum into this Wednesday’s game, as they travel up the road to face local rival NMH at 2:30pm.
