Four varsity girls soccer players received post-season accolades for the 2018 season. Senior co-captains Bailey Cheetham and Valerie Hetherington were named to the Western New England Prep School Soccer Association All-Star team and juniors Annie Kane and Annabel Gerber were named to the New England Prep School Athletic Council Junior All-Star team.
On Sunday, November 11, Bailey and Valerie joined Class A and B All-Stars from fellow WNEPSSA schools to play in this year’s all-star game hosted by the Ethel Walker School.
Bailey, a speedy and tenacious attacking player, was a key contributor to the Big Green’s attack this season, playing in both midfielder and forward positions this season. Her tenacity on the attack was always equally matched in her defensive efforts. Bailey was always in the thick of the action on the field, whether she was making a final pass to a teammate, being on the end of a through ball to score or breaking up an opponents’ attack – she was there! Bailey registered goals this season against NMH and Andover. Great job, Bailey!
In goal this season, Valerie was a reliable shot stopper for the Big Green despite missing several weeks of action due to injury. Val made an impact this season with her energy and big time saves. Coming up big for the green and white, time and time again turning away the opponents’ opportunities and posted two shutouts this season. Congrats, Val!
The NEPSAC Junior All-Star game took place on Sunday, November 18 at Woburn High School. Along with Coach Barbato coaching their team, Annie and Annabel joined players from other NEPSAC schools on one of this year’s four junior all-star teams. Moving the ball well across the field, their all-star team walked away with the victory!
Annie, a junior from Wilmington, NC made an impact for the Big Green in the midfield this season with her great ball movement and combination play. Annie’s tireless work rate from 18 to 18 resulted in her being the catalyst to several of the team’s attacking opportunities this season and resulted in Annie netting a couple of goals this fall!
Annabel selflessly stepped up for the Big Green changing positions not once, but twice during the course of the season. Due to injuries, Annabel was asked by her coaches to switch from a centermidfielder to a centerback. Moreover, playing as a lone centerback in a three-back system. Annabel quickly developed into a tenacious and gritty 1v1 defender anchoring the backline with her competitive drive. Furthermore, Annabel assisted the Big Green attack with her dangerous set piece services and shots.
Looking forward to Annie and Annabel’s impact on the field during their senior season!
Congratulations to the girls varsity soccer team on their 2018 season!
