This past weekend, thirteen Deerfield rowing alums, competed in the 53rd Head of the Charles Regatta in Cambridge, Massachusetts for their respective colleges. Since its origin in 1965, the Head of the Charles Regatta has welcomed the world’s best crew teams to the banks of the Charles River for the ultimate two-day rowing competition.

Grant Louis ‘14, a Hinsdale, Illinois native, coxed Yale’s second boat at this year’s Head of the Charles that crossed the finish line at 14:08.53, good for 18th among men’s championship eight schools. Louis, now a senior at Yale, has had a decorated career as a coxswain in New Haven. He has been a four year member of the Yale men’s heavyweight rowing team, contributing each of those years. As a freshman and sophomore, he coxed the third and second varsity to numerous race wins such as IRA Championships and the Blackwell Cup. For his efforts, he received First Team All-Ivy Honors.
At Deerfield, Louis was a four year member of the men’s varsity rowing team as a coxswain and served as co-captain his senior year with fellow classmate Rich Caputo ’14. Grant coxed the Deerfield Boys’ 4+ to a 1st place finish at the Youth National Championships in 2012 and a 3rd place finish in 2014. Additionally, he coxed the boy’s 4+ that won silver at NEIRAs in 2012, bronze in 2013 and gold in 2014 during his senior year.
Rich Caputo ’14, also competed in his last Head of the Charles on Sunday. His Brown University second varsity heavyweight boat finished in 24th place, crossing the finish line in a time of 14:26.21. During his time at Brown, Caputo has been a contributing member of the crew team. In his first-year, he rowed in the sixth seat of the varsity eight boat that placed fourth at the IRA National Championship. As a sophomore, he stroked the second varsity boat that finished third in the petite finals at the IRA National Championship. Last year as a junior, Caputo rowed in the fifth seat of the second varsity boat that won the petite final at the IRA National Championship and placed sixth at Eastern Sprints. He was also named an IRA All-Academic.
At Deerfield, Caputo was a member of the boys varsity rowing team and served as co-captain his senior year with Louis. He won the NEIRI gold medal and Youth Nationals bronze medal in 2014 as a senior and was a NEIRA bronze medalist in 2013. His sophomore year in 2012, the team won a NEIRA silver medal and a Youth Nationals gold medal. During his senior year, Caputo was also awarded with the Coaches’ Award.
