On Saturday in their home opener of the 2021-2022 season, the boys varsity hockey team came from behind two times during regulation vs. Trinity-Pawling School to earn the thrilling victory.
In their third game of the week, the boys varsity hockey team returned home to host Trinity-Pawling in the Class of 1993 Rink in front of an electric student section crowd.
Trinity-Pawling opened the game’s scoring early in the first period to go ahead 1-0. The score remained the same to close out the first period of the game.
The Big Green kicked off their scoring in the second period, notching two goals. Cam Herr’s ‘24 goal leveled the scoresheet for Deerfield, assisted by Jesse Allecia ’24 and Isaac Abbott ’22. At the end of the second period, Jesse Allecia registered the second Big Green goal of the game to give the squad a goal advantage heading into the third period, assists to Cam Herr and Isaac Abbott.
In total, five goals were netted in the third period between both teams. It was the visitors who brought the score level ten seconds into the third period then scored another goal to regain the lead.
The Big Green were not were to be denied on their home ice. With the score 3-2 in favor of Trinity-Pawling mid-way through the final frame, the Big Green responded within a minute of Trinity’s Pawling go-ahead-goal to level the score once again on Ryan Bullock’s ’24 goal assisted by Billy Mrowka ’22.
Shortly thereafter, John Bloomer etched his name on the scoresheet giving the Big Green the go-ahead goal and ultimately the game-winning goal, assists to Tom Molson ‘24 and Jesse Allecia.
With both teams frantically exchanging plays in their respective offensive zones the score remained a one-goal game. The Big Green had to close out the game on the penalty kill for the final 5 minutes of the contest.
While shorthanded, Drew Garzone ’23 secured the victory for the Big Green, registering an unassisted goal to give the home side the 5-3 lead at the final whistle.
In goal for Deerfield, Jake Fillion ’22 made 22 saves, helping the Big Green earn the win.
The team will again have another three-game week. They will travel to Kimball Union this Wednesday and return home for a Friday and Saturday for contests against St. Paul’s and Choate respectively.
