Athletes of the Week

Congratulations to our first winter Athletes of the Week! Great job helping your teams get a great start to the season!

Girls Varsity Hockey: Ellia Chiang ‘21

Our first AOTW is Ellia Chiang ’21 for her efforts in our opening game vs. St. Marks. Ellia has grown so much as a player during her time at Deerfield, and this season has been off to a great start for her. She was a force to be reckoned with in all three zones. She produced the majority of our offense, while also being a stand out in the defensive zone with her backchecking and d-zone coverage. Ellia earned hockey’s athlete of the week, for being a leader by example on the ice, and for being someone her teammates can count on.

Girls Varsity Basketball: Kelly Lahart ‘20

The girls varsity basketball team’s first athlete of the week is Kelly Lahart.  She has gotten us off to a positive and hardworking start to the season with her leadership and enthusiasm.  She has been both a vocal leader and a leader by example on the court.  She comes ready to work hard every day and she inspires the same in her teammates.  We are so glad she is a captain this year!

Girls JV Hockey: Jaden Simpson ‘21

The girls JV hockey AOTW is Jaden Simpson ’21. Jaden has had a great start to the season, as she has worked hard at practice and was an offensive force in our game against NMH on Saturday. Jaden scored two goals, and almost earned herself a hat-trick, but the NMH goalie made a last second save of the puck on the goal line. Keep up the great work, Jaden!

Girls JV Basketball: Molly Fischer ‘20

JV girls hosted NMH on Saturday. With seven returners, Deerfield came out of the gate and controlled the scoreboard most of the game. In true NMH fashion they clawed their way back and in the fourth quarter actually took the lead. Molly Fisher, as point guard, controlled the offense most of the game. With one minute and thirty one seconds left in the game and down by three, we had a few chances to close the gap but failed to do so. But there was no quit in our girls. With nine seconds left we intentionally fouled their point guard. She missed both foul shots and this gave us one final chance to tie the game and send it into overtime. With two seconds left the ball went to Molly at the top of the key. She let it go and the ball bounced off the backboard, hit the back of the rim, hit the side of the rim, and then bounced high off the front of the rim.  With no time left on the clock the ball dropped in for the tie! We scored six points in overtime and took home the victory! Molly was a key component as she controlled our offense and threw up a clutch shot to help secure our first victory of the season! An outstanding effort from Molly and from the entire JV girls basketball team!

Girls Varsity Swimming & Diving: Nafi Sall ’20

After spending the year abroad in France last year, Nafi has returned to the Girls’ Varsity Swimming and Diving Team excited to reunite with her teammates and work hard in the pool.  Nafi has a fantastic attitude and she shows up for practice every day with a smile on her face, eager to improve as a swimmer and cheer on her teammates.  We are thrilled to have Nafi back and we look forward to the many positive contributions she will make to our team this season!

Boys Varsity Swimming & Diving: Teddy McCarthy ’20

For his willingness to contribute as both a swimmer and a diver and his leadership in practice and in meets, Teddy McCarthy is athlete of the week for Boys’ Varsity Swimming & Diving. While Teddy typically competes as our top diver, he has always been willing to jump into a relay to help out his teammates. At our opening meet against Milton last Saturday, Teddy went even further in his commitment to the team. He swam the 50 Free as well as two relays to help ensure Deerfield’s victory. His 50 Free split as the anchor in the Medley Relay was a personal best time. This commitment to the good of the team and eagerness to go above and beyond earned Teddy this spot. We commend Teddy for leading by example and look forward to seeing what else he achieves as one of our senior captains.

Boys Varsity Hockey: Keith Davenport ‘20

The BV Hockey AOTW is Keith Davenport ’20. Keith showed great leadership and effort in our loss against Groton, scoring the team’s lone goal on Saturday night. He has been the model of consistency in practices and team activities all year.

Boys Varsity Squash: Adrian Todd ‘20

Adrian’s match went on last with us tied 3-3. He lost the first game 12-10, but went on to win the next three4,4, and 5. Great team win!

Varsity Wrestling: Adrian Yao ’20

Though he’s a first-year varsity wrestler—and he’s yet to have a match—Adrian has set the tone in the Kravis. When the team does twenty pushups, Adrian does twenty-one; when his teammates lag, he pushes them, always leading by example. No matter what the drill, no matter what the skill, Adrian gives 100% at all times. His focused, tenacious, and determined attitude is an inspiration to the whole team. It’s especially to his credit that he’s new to the sport. We demand a lot; Adrian always bring it. He’s an adroit, capable athlete with great prospects. It’s an honor to coach him!

Go Big Green!
