Congratulations to this week’s Athletes of the Week!
Girls Varsity Tennis: Isha Rao ‘22
Isha has been a dominant player for Varsity Girls Tennis all season. She holds down the top singles spot on our ladder, and has not lost a single match. Isha’s relentless style of play and top-notch sportswomanship set a high bar for competitors. On Saturday, Isha delivered another convincing win at first singles, giving up only two total games to Loomis’s top player.
Varsity Baseball: Henry Gustavson ‘20
Henry Gustavson is our AOTW. Varsity baseball pitcher Henry Gustavson ’20 threw a no hitter last Wednesday at Cushing Academy, propelling the Big Green to an important 6-0 league win over the Cushing Penguins. Henry faced 23 batters (two over the minimum) and threw only 64 pitches (including an amazing 51 strikes) for the complete game win. Keep up the great work Henry!
JV Baseball: Jack Chorske ’22
Jack Chorske is the JV baseball AOTW. Jack has played a steady center field for us recently and is much improved at the plate. He had a big hit for us against Eaglebrook on Saturday, driving in two runs. He is a positive teammate who helps those around him. Congrats Jack!
Girls Varsity Lacrosse: Mimi Pastor ‘19
The Girls Varsity Lacrosse athlete of the week is Mimi Pastor. Mimi has played a critical role in the midfield for us this year, and her speed and athleticism have been a significant asset for our midfield transitional play. She is effective at both ends of the field and sets a high standard for work ethic and grit.
Track & Field:
Boys Track & Field: Ethan Chen ’20, Donnie Gray ’21, Cortland Dicks ’21, and Quinton Quirrenbach ’19
The boys 4x100m relay team: Ethan Chen, Donnie Gray, Cortland Dicks, and Quinton Quirrenbach. Taking advantage of strong baton passes and the warm conditions, the 4x100m relay team ran a terrific race and set a new Deerfield record of 43.73. (The old record was set in 2000.) With two meets left, these four boys hope to lower that mark even more.
Girls Track & Field: Mina Liang ’19
Mina ran her first ever 300m hurdle race, finishing 2nd overall, ran a strong leg on one of Deerfield’s three 4x400m relay teams, and earned another point with a fourth place finish in the high jump. Mina, one of the girls’ captains, set an exemplary tone for her teammates and will look to lead them to strong finishes over the last two meets.
Varsity Softball: Julia Hioe ‘22
Julie Hioe is our athlete of the week! Julia has had recent success at the plate – belting multiple hits in both games last week. She also drove in 2 runs during our game vs. Marionapolis. Julia is playing a new position without complaint, and making terrific plays at third base. Thank you, Julia! Keep it up!
Ultimate: Juliette Lowe ’21
She is hard-working, always looking to improve, virtually always one of the first on the field each day for practice, never complains, and is unflappable in games. She’s really fast, too, and kids know they can count on her to be in the right place to catch the disk!
Girls JV Lacrosse: Bella Geraci ’19
Bella is a fierce competitor on the JV Lacrosse team and the positive spirit she brings to practice each day is contagious. She has a strong shot and has been one of our top scorers on the attack this season. As one of our captains, we want to recognize Bella for her leadership and the sense of team that she promotes each day. Bella, thank you for your contributions so far. Keep it up!
Girls Varsity Rowing: Bailyn Prichett ’19
“Bailyn’s work ethic and focus is contagious. She always pushes those around her to work their hardest and to go the extra mile. As a captain and senior, Bailyn has been a great leader to all, proving her commitment time and time again. She is an inspiration both on and off the water. Rock on Bailyn!”
Boys JV Lacrosse: Robbie Sawyers ‘21
Robert exploded for 4 goals against Eaglebrook and gave the Big Green an explosion of offense in the 2nd quarter that was much needed. Robert exploited slow slides and scored several goals from the righty wing. In addition, Sawyers stepped up in practice this week by offering to play goalie. It is rare for someone to play goalie one day, then score 4 goals the next as an attackman.
Boys Varsity Tennis: Alfi Auersperg ‘19
Senior captain Alfi Auersperg went undefeated in the top spot in both singles and doubles recently against Choate and Williston. He has been serving huge, hitting big forehands, and been a force at the net. Against Hotchkiss on 5/8, Alfi played one of the best matches of his career and clinched the win for Deerfield with his 6-4, 6-3 victory. For his leadership on the court, Alfi has earned the title of athlete of the week.
Girls Varsity Water Polo: Darcy del Real ‘22
Darcy de Real ’22, learning on the job to play the demanding 2-meter position, has gained confidence in her shot and now encourages her teammates to feed her the ball, an option that also opens better opportunities for our outside shooters. Darcy has cheerfully and effectively played in the goal in the exhibition periods that allow younger players to gain valuable experience.
JV Golf: Janis Chen ’20
Janis Chen is the JV golf team’s AOTW. Janis shot a 39 vs Williston last Wednesday. Great work Janis!
