Athletes of the Week

Congratulations to our first fall 2018 Athletes of the Week!

Varsity Field Hockey: Christina Halloran ‘20

The varsity field hockey athlete of the week is Christina Halloran ’20. Christina returned to campus this fall in great shape, and her speed, strength, and stamina have made her a force in the backfield. She plays with poise and intensity, and puts forth 100% effort every time she steps on the field. Christina led our strong defensive effort against Berkshire this past Saturday that resulted in a 6-1 win. Her positive attitude and fun spirit make her an asset to our team and we look forward to her leadership and stellar play throughout the fall. Congratulations on a great start to the season, Stina!

Girls Varsity Soccer: Margaret Williams ‘19

Margaret Williams is the first girls varsity soccer athlete of the week this fall. Throughout preseason Marge has consistently been an example for her teammates. Her work rate, positive energy and communication have been valuable as a new team comes together at the beginning of the season. In the Milton game, she selflessly and bravely blocked a Mustang free kick in a dangerous part of our defensive third of the field and played in different positions when called upon. We look forward to leaning on her experience and example as we march forward through the season!

Boys Cross-Country: Tom Dillon ‘19

One of our tri-captains, Tom opened his 2018 XC campaign with his best season-opening time of the last four years, nearly a minute ahead of where he was last year at this time.  Restrained by his coaches’ instructions to run a conservative first half of the race, Tom let loose in the final mile of his 5K and concluded with a tremendous kick over the last quarter-mile to close the gap on a number of runners.  He demonstrated his fitness and fierce competitive streak, both inspirations to the younger runners he leads on our team.  A great tone-setting moment for our season from a senior captain!

Girls Cross-Country: Gemma Bishop ‘19

This girl has shown leadership from the start of the season. As captain, she diligently led the team through warm ups and exercises. She shows up every day with a positive attitude. When it came to this Saturday, everyone was a bit on edge as we prepared for our first race at the Brush Invitational. Our athlete of the week kept the conversation light and encouraged everyone that they were going to do well. When it came time to line up for the junior/senior girls race, this girl put on her game face. With extreme perseverance and grit, she PR’ed on a very hot Saturday. She finished with an exceptional time of 22:05 and was 5th overall. We cannot wait to see what she does at Canterbury this weekend and continues to do throughout the season. For these reasons and many more, Gemma Bishop is proudly named Girl’s XC athlete of the week.

Girls Varsity Volleyball: Nat Jimenez ‘20

For Girls’ Varsity Volleyball, this week’s Athlete of the Week is Nat Jimenez ’20. In our Saturday match against Milton Academy, Nat played fantastic defense that set-up our attacking players for success. After suffering an injury that kept her out of the second match against Miss Porter’s, Nat was the loudest, most enthusiastic team member on the bench, supporting her teammates and helping spot plays from the other team. She embodies the “team-first” ethos we strive for at Deerfield.

Boys Jr. B Soccer: Jack Chorske ‘22

Our AOTW is Jack Chorske. Jack volunteered to play goal for us this year, despite having little experience at the position, and has been doing a great job so far. We appreciate his can-do attitude and willingness to step up and volunteer. Hopefully, the rest of the team will follow his example and we’ll have a great year on quad squad!

Girls Reserve Soccer: Piper Day ‘21

In the absence of an experienced goalie, Piper stepped up to handle our goal-keeping responsibilities.  During her first days in the net, she has been positive, flexible and hard working.  We appreciate her enthusiasm!!

Boys Varsity Water Polo: Ben Chen  ‘21

Two weeks after beginning to play in the goal, Ben Chen ’21 made his varsity debut in the second half in the game against Choate and handled the pressure superbly, making three difficult saves and initiating the counterattack effectively.

Varsity Football: Max Stevens ‘20

The Varsity football team’s opening Athlete of the Week is Max Stevens.  The junior linebacker from Lexington, MA led a stout defensive effort against a talented Lawrenceville attack.  Max tallied 15 tackles, 3 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks on the afternoon.  He was an impact on special teams and led with his tireless effort the entire afternoon.  He is definitely an impact player to keep your eyes on this season.

Go Big Green!
